The Brazilian fruit industry is celebrating.The sector reached the mark of US$ 1 billion in fruit exports in 2021. The country sent around 1.2 million tons of fruit to the international market, 18% more in volume registered in 2020. Revenue was US$ 1.060 billion, growth of 20%.
According to the Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (ABRAFRUTAS), sales to the international market became attractive and intensified with the rise of the dollar and euro against the real, which resulted in the achievement of a goal desired for some time.
The weather was another factor that favored production, good harvests were carried out, that is, there was an increase in productivity and quality, especially the crops that are at the top of exports.
In addition to these two factors, there was a greater consumption of healthy foods since the beginning of the pandemic with the aim of increasing immunity, which resulted in more fruit sales in the national and international market.
Mango was the most exported fruit in 2021, with around 272,500 tons of fruit shipped. It is at the top of exports and increased by 12% compared to shipments in the same period in 2020.
In terms of percentage increases, apples stand out, with sales of 79% more than in 2020, and 58% in volume. Shipments amounted to 99,000 tons of fruit sent to the international market, mainly the European market, which accounts for around 70% of shipments of Brazilian fruit.
The grape was another fruit that had a big increase in exports during the year. Growth of 55% in volume and 43% in value were recorded. Papaya, lemon and melon also had expressive growth.
When considering only the month of December, Brazilian fruit exports totaled 131.4 thousand tons, a growth of 6% higher than that recorded in the same month of 2020, with 123.8 thousand tons. In revenue, there was an increase of 3%, with US$ 109.2 million recorded in December 2021, compared to US$ 106.5 million in the previous year.
For the president of ABRAFRUTAS, it is important to highlight that fruit growing is a socioeconomic and environmentally sustainable segment and is the agro sector that employs the most, there are about 5.5 million direct jobs. The exported fruits have international certifications, such as Global Gap, Rainforest Alliance, GRASP, Fair Trade, Tesco Nurture, BSCI, HACCP / HACCP.
