MELON: Exports surprise in April

Fruit exports in April exceed the volume exported in the same period last year.

As happens every year, Brazilian melon exports reduce in volume in April compared to the previous month, as the main exporting region, Rio Grande do Norte/Ceará, enters the off-season.

However, surprisingly, shipments were higher than in the same period last year.

According to data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), the volume of melon exported in April was around 11 thousand tons, an increase of 47% compared to April/21.

What happened can be explained by the low supply of fruit in Europe, the Brazilian market complicated by the economic crisis, and the still attractive exchange rate. Thus, even in the off-season, those few producers who still had melons chose to export.

DESTINATIONS – On April/22, the main importers of Brazilian melons were the United Kingdom (with 37% of the total exported by Brazil in the period), Spain (also with 37%) and the Netherlands (Netherlands), with 22%.
